Is social connection the mental health prescription we need to write?
Social Connection and Mental Health.
These are my people. We met in 2013 as we embarked on a nine month leadership transformation process with @leadershipatlanta. I smile when I see their faces. We have real, real conversations. I get to be my authentic self and so do they. Why is this important?
It is time to be deliberate about the connections and social bonds we create. We are wired for connection and need real relationships at work and at home. Fostering these connections is critical to health and wellness. My team works to formalize this approach by formalizing the counseling relationship and prescriptions for healthy habits, including regular exercise, nutritious foods, stress management, self-care and creating a plan for real connections with other people.
The data is astounding. Feeling connected to others can help improve cancer survival rates, decrease depression, impact blood sugars, weight management, and improve overall mental health. If you are a data junkie like me, I am including the link to the National Institutes of Health meta-analysis on this exact subject.
